Citizenship

Key Stage 3

  • Al l of the skills we develop in key stage 3 prepare you for the skills you will use in GCSE, and A-Level Politics.
  • Citizenship expects an open mind and as such you should always question everything you are learning about.
  • In all of your lessons think conceptually; How does this relate to what we have been talking about?
  • Ask probing questions to dig that little bit deeper; What else could we assume?
  • Always ask How do you know this?  Question the provenance of evidence and source material of rationales.
  • Question viewpoints and perspectives – is there another way of looking at this?  Is this reasonable?
  • Take things further – what are the consequences?, what would happen if....?
  • Question why that question was asked.
  • You should try and take more of a leading role when we do group work.
  • There will also always be an extension task that will be on the board or you can ask your teacher for if you finish the task you have been set. These are again designed to challenge you.

Key Stage 4

  • Use and apply what you have learnt about the origins and substance of different viewpoints to present coherent, perceptive and compelling argument.
  • Be prepared to form evidenced and reasoned arguments on a wide range of Citizenship issues.
  • Research is important - research complex issues, select appropriate methodologies and draw on your own and others’ experience of taking action.
  • Look for examples in the world around you of democracy and justice at work – and where it’s not.
  • Take a leading role in undertaking courses of action with others to address citizenship issues and problems -  help out in the community – where can you help? What can you do? Be an active citizen.
  • Think about how citizens can improve society through individual and collective actions and democratic processes and what it is they can do.
