Welcome to the Department of Physical Education at Park Hall

Physical Education plays a vital part in the Academy's curriculum. It is offered to all students at Key Stages 3, 4 and 5 where the students are given the opportunity to sample a range of indoor and outdoor activities. Many of our sports teams are successful in local and national competitions and many of our students have gone on to represent the Academy and their country in international events.

The Level 3 BTEC Nationals in Sport and Exercise Sciences are designed for learners who are preparing for future employment in the sport and related industries. In particular they prepare learners for those roles that require a scientific background or for entry to appropriate undergraduate degree programmes.

The 1080 Guided Learning Hours. BTEC National Diploma extends the specialist work related focus available from the BTEC Certificate.

There is potential for the qualification to prepare learners for employment in the appropriate vocational sector and is suitable for those who have decided that they wish to enter a particular area of work.

Some adult learners may wish to complete this qualification in order to enter a specialist area of employment or progress into higher education. Other learners may want to extend the specialism that they followed on the BTEC National Certificate programme.

Progression from the BTEC National Diploma could be into employment where learners might take professional body examinations or complete NVQs. Alternatively, learners could continue to degree or other higher-education programmes in the same vocational sector or in a related sector.

The course will support your own participation in clubs and teams and will aid to improve your performances in them.

GCSE Physical Education

Course Content

In the theory section of the course you will study a variety of subjects related to sport such as:

  • How the body works
  • Society and sport
  • Health related fitness
In the practical section of the course the students will be given a wide range of practical activities and sports to experience and develop their skills in. You will eventually focus on four specific areas of activity where you will develop the skills necessary to analyse and improve your own performance. You will begin to understand coaching and can officiate or umpire a chosen sport/activity.

Assessment

Unit 1: Knowledge and Understanding for The Active Participant 80 marks

External Assessment - 40% of single award written paper

Section A - Objective tests and short answer questions

Section B - Extended written answers, based on a scenario issued as pre-release material.

Unit 2: The Active Participant 90 marks

Controlled Assessment - 60% of Single Award

4 assessments: from at least 2 Sports/Activities at least 2 performances must be as player/participant and at least one must be in a different role coach/official.

Future Sixth Form and Career Opportunities

A good grade will help you to move on to any AS, A2 or BTEC course. Employment opportunities where your skills will be particularly valued include the sport and leisure industry, travel and tourism and teaching.

Who Is This Course Suitable For?

Those who have shown commitment in Years 7, 8, and 9, enjoy physical activities and are interested in human biology, sport fitness and health.

BTEC Sport

Course Content

Pupils are expected to complete 6 units in total they include.

  • The Body in Sport
  • Health, Safety and Injury in Sport
  • Preparation for Sport
  • Practical Outdoor and Adventurous Activities
  • Planning and Leading Adventurous Activities
  • Practical Sport or Adventurous Activities

The course is divided into theory and practical. With most of the practical being a weeks course at an outward bounds centre where pupils will plan and lead an expedition. This is compulsory for all pupils

BTEC First Diploma is equivalent to 4 GCSEs grades A*-C
