GCSE Physical Education
Course Content
In the theory section of the course you will study a variety of subjects related to sport such as:
- How the body works
- Society and sport
- Health related fitness
In the practical section of the course the students will be given a wide range of practical activities and sports to experience and develop their skills in. You will eventually focus on four specific areas of activity where you will develop the skills necessary to analyse and improve your own performance. You will begin to understand coaching and can officiate or umpire a chosen sport/activity.
Assessment
Unit 1: Knowledge and Understanding for The Active Participant 80 marks
External Assessment - 40% of single award written paper
Section A - Objective tests and short answer questions
Section B - Extended written answers, based on a scenario issued as pre-release material.
Unit 2: The Active Participant 90 marks
Controlled Assessment - 60% of Single Award
4 assessments: from at least 2 Sports/Activities at least 2 performances must be as player/participant and at least one must be in a different role coach/official.

A good grade will help you to move on to any AS, A2 or BTEC course. Employment opportunities where your skills will be particularly valued include the sport and leisure industry, travel and tourism and teaching.
Who Is This Course Suitable For?
Those who have shown commitment in Years 7, 8, and 9, enjoy physical activities and are interested in human biology, sport fitness and health.
BTEC Sport
Course Content
Pupils are expected to complete 6 units in total they include.
- The Body in Sport
- Health, Safety and Injury in Sport
- Preparation for Sport
- Practical Outdoor and Adventurous Activities
- Planning and Leading Adventurous Activities
- Practical Sport or Adventurous Activities
The course is divided into theory and practical. With most of the practical being a weeks course at an outward bounds centre where pupils will plan and lead an expedition. This is compulsory for all pupils
Assessment
100% coursework
BTEC First Diploma is equivalent to 4 GCSEs grades A*-C
Pupils will be awarded either:

Merit
