What is Business Studies about?

Business Studies is about what happens in the world of business and how this affects all of us.

What will I study in Business Studies?

You will be introduced to the world of small businesses and will look at what makes someone a successful business person. You will find out how to develop an idea and spot an opportunity, and turn that into a successful business.

You will learn more about how small businesses are developed and discover how businesses promote themselves and keep their customers happy. You will learn how businesses manage both their finances and the people who work for them.

If you enjoy the following things then the course is suitable for you:

• communicating and explaining your ideas

• thinking creatively and making decisions

• working with numbers to solve business problems

• learning about the world of business through research and investigation, as well as through practical tasks

What next?

A qualification in Business Studies leads to many opportunities. A Level Business Studies is offered in the Sixth Form and the skills learnt from the Key Stage 4 courses, in particularly from the BTECs will enable students to directly enter the world of work.

Why study a BTEC?

The Business Studies Department offers four BTEC courses. A BTEC course is a vocational qualification that looks directly at how a business works and draws on real world examples to make the learning take on a more relevant angle in preparation for the world of work. BTEC courses consist of producing a portfolio of work covering six units.

BTEC First Diploma in Business

This course aims to provide you with a practical appreciation of what ‘being in business’ entails.

BTEC First Diploma in Retail

This course looks at the world of retail and shopping and considers a variety of topics from how shopping has changed over the years, to how designers persuade us to chose the fashions we do, to the importance of marketing a ready meal.

BTEC First Diploma in Travel & Tourism – this course looks at the travel and tourism industry and focuses on European holiday destinations, business skills for travel and tourism, and exploring marketing in travel and tourism.

 POST 16 BUSINESS

What do we study at A Level?

The qualification is built around a core unit with an enterprise theme, to enable students to think of a new business idea and how they might research and develop it. Students will think about how their learning applies to their own business idea.

The qualification will introduce students to international business, equipping them either to work in or to manage a business in an international context.

A variety of assessment techniques will be used – supported multiple-choice questions, data-response questions, case studies and a decision-making report.

BTEC National in Uniformed Public Services

This qualification gives you an in-depth understanding of the skills you need for an active career in the uniformed services.

The structure of the course allows you to focus on your interests within the sector, such as outdoor and adventurous expeditions or the custodial care of individuals.

Where will this qualification take me?

With the international recognition of BTEC courses such as this, you can progress straight into employment. If successful there are a variety of potential careers that you can explore, all of which will benefit from your studies, for example: fire fighter, coastguard assistant, police officer or Royal Navy officer.

 Extra curricular

We also run the Young Enterprise scheme during year 12 and this is open to all students studying any subject in 6 th form.

Young Enterprise offers pupils the opportunity to set up and run their own business as though it were real. They take the on leading roles, sell shares, have their own bank account, and sell their product or service to the public. They can enter their business into a national competition if they wish.
