PARK HALL STUDENTS RUN COAST TO COAST (AND BACK AGAIN!)

Park Hall Academy students set themselves the impressive target of covering a distance of 190 miles (The distance it would take to run across Britain) during the school day on Friday 19 th March in order to raise money for Sport Relief.

Over 400 students volunteered to give up one of their lessons to run around the ½ mile circuit of the school’s grounds. All students managed a mile with many completing 4 or 5 miles during their designated hour.

Park Hall Sixth Formers, who organised the event, ran throughout the day in order to clock up more miles with Sam Sadler finally stopping after completing 22 miles which was an amazing achievement. Year 11 student William Partington also raised extra money by completing a half marathon distance in his army cadet uniform.

For added competitive interest 45 students decided to run in their Blues kit whilst 53 ran in Villa colours. Everyone had a rewarding experience and made a real contribution to Sports Relief.

Collectively the school smashed their 190 mile target, eventually clocking up 912 miles - 38 miles further than the distance between John O’Groats and Land s End - raising over £2,646 on the day with more sponsorship money expected for Monday.

Director of Sixth form, Mr Cornell said “I feel really proud of all our students for taking part. The Sixth Formers have played a huge part in organising the event, providing support and organising refreshments. Year 12 student Joshua Crawley has been the main man behind this event and we are indebted to him.”

Sports Star Competition

Name the saw tutor groups competing against each other to win a prize for the whole form. All they had to do was complete more entry forms than any other form. The individual with the most correct answers won a pair of tickets to the next home match for Birmingham City or Aston Villa.

Birmingham City Versus Arsenal Saturday 27 th March

Aston Villa Versus Sunderland Wednesday 24 th March

The competition began on the 12 th March and ended on the 19 th March. The competition was carried out in good spirits. The highest score was 18 out of 25 and was the prize was awarded to a student in Mrs Todd’s form.

Finally a special mention should go to Jack and Grant in year 10 for helping put it all together.

Sasha in Y9

“It was very funny to watch people’s faces when doing the quiz because some people thought they would know all of the answers.”

Operation Christmas Child

Once again Park Hall Academy students and staff decided to support the UK's largest children's Christmas appeal, ‘Operation Christmas Child.’ This involved wrapping, packing and sending over 100 shoe boxes packed full of gifts and goodies to disadvantaged children from around the world. We have since been informed that the shoe boxes from Park Hall Academy were sent off to children in Bosnia and Serbia.

We are extremely proud to be part of this Christmas ‘miracle’ and feel it is really important for the Park Hall community to develop an understanding of the meaning of a simple gift to a child. It also gives us the opportunity to let a child know that they have not been forgotten at this special time of the year. The students looked at the lives of children from around the world in the build up to Christmas and also researched the charity and its contribution over the past nineteen years in their Citizenship lessons.

Children in Need: Friday 20 November 2009

Once again the students and staff at Park Hall Academy wanted to support the BBC Children in Need annual fund raising campaign to help raise funds to improve the lives of disadvantaged children and young people across the UK. This years campaign at Park Hall Academy included collecting ‘Pennies For Pudsey’, screening a film which highlights how children’s lives had been transformed as a result of ‘Children in Need’, cakes sales and Sixth Form students wearing a tie for the day. A lot of fun was had by everyone involved and the Academy managed to raise £344.00 towards this important campaign to help children in the community.

‘Lest we never forget’ – Visit by Mr Benson World War II Veteran

We were so fortunately to have a visit from Mr Horace Benson, S.Q.M.S. a World War II Veteran on 13 th November 2009. This visit was made possible through the help and support given by Mrs Cathy Tibbles Clerk to Castle Bromwich Parish Council.

Mr Benson delivered an inspirational assembly to Year 7 pupils at Park Hall Academy and he and Mrs Tibbles later had breakfast with Harry Burke, Joseph Short, Hollie-Rio Mansfield, Michaela Harris and Adam Kelly.

Mr Benson explained that he had volunteered to join the Army in April 1940. In June 1944 Horace boarded LCT301 from Portsmouth and arrived at Sword Beach, Normandy at 8.30 a.m. Mr Benson and his regiment had to wade ashore under terrible gunfire and then moved forward to Poix and Lille in France, then through Belgium and Holland to Germany. Horace’s last station was with the Navy on H.M.S Rupert at Wilhelmshaven. He finally left in July 1946 with the rank of S.Q.M.S.

Mr Benson’s made a real and lasting impression on the students at Park Hall Academy. The students were fascinated to hear about Mr Benson’s life story and numerous children put their hands up to ask questions and consequently were given the opportunity to have breakfast with Mr Benson, who answered all of their questions with enthusiasm.

The students were shown pictures of the actual Landing Craft that transported Mr Benson across the Channel, his Beach Ordnance Badges, lots of fascinating photos and he also explained why he was awarded the numerous medals he wore so proudly. The children were extremely interested to hear about how the regiment landed on the beach in Normandy where Mr Benson was hit in the face by mortar and various near misses, his steel helmet really saved the day. The pupils certainly benefited from Mr Benson’s visit and thanked him for sharing his experiences with them so that we shall never forget the generation ‘who gave their tomorrows for our today.’ Finally Mr Benson was presented with a rosette made by Bethany Pope with the inscription “To our Greatest Heroes.”

YEAR 11 WORLD OF WORK DAY 2009
On Wednesday, 25th November 2009, Year 11 students received Park Hall Academy’s Careers Education World of Work (WoW) Day. WoW 2008 was good but WoW’09 did not disappoint. The aims of WoW Days are to enable students to engage with specialists from a variety of career fields; identify the key skills needed to be successful in that area; discuss the working life benefits and challenges in various areas of employment and to consider possible qualification routes into such profession. The WoW’09 Careers Education package included students completing personal career planning tasks, attending an Assembly on options after Year 11 and attended four 1hour WoW workshops that each student had opted for, delivered by a wealth of specialists in various career field.
The WoW’09 workshops attended by students included:

  • Sports Management delivered by Birmingham City Football Development Staff
  • Careers in the Media delivered by Bravissimo
  • Business, Hospitality & Customer Service workshops by Hilton Hotels
  • Working in the Performing Arts with Scott Adkins (X-men Origins Stuntman, Actor, Martial artist & Choreographer)
  • Child care, Learning & Development delivered by Park Hall Academy BTEC National Sixth Form students

The day was a great success – thanks to the excellent, interactive and informative workshops delivered by the representative and guest speakers and equally thanks to the impeccably behaved students who got immersed themselves in all that the day had to offer. Students got involved, asked questions and made the most of this Every Child Matters immersion day all about Year 11s and their futures.

NATIONAL ROAD SAFETY WEEK

As part of our continued whole school approach towards promoting ‘Being Safe’ at Park Hall Academy, the 23rd-27th November saw the launch of our National Road Safety Week campaign, 2009.
This year, we focused on including National Road Safety as part of the Year 7 Humanities Skills-based curriculum. The skills focus for the week was ‘Effective Participants’ and Year 7 students worked in pairs to research, plan, design and evaluate a Road Safety Campaign that would include a symbol, poster and leaflet that would encourage children, young people, pedestrians, cyclists and drivers to be safe on and near the roads.
The lessons were enriched by materials from the government’s Think! website and PC Terri Discenza also delivered to each year group circle-time workshop to discuss being safe on the roads and behaving sensibly as a passenger, cyclist or pedestrian.
Students produced an impressive wealth of Road Safety promotional materials, which will not only provide evidence towards their Personal Learning & thinking Skills portfolio but will also be entered into a year competition to be judge by Mr Morrison and PC Discenza, the best work of which will see pairs of Year 7s having their work reproduced and displayed in and around the school community.

‘Let’s Give Bullying The Boot’
PARK HALL ACADEMY ANTI-BULLYING CAMPAIGN
16th-20th November 2009
At Park Hall Academy, we are committed to and proud of developing and enhancing our anti-bullying practices and awareness through important campaigns such as during Anti-Bullying Week.
This year was no exception, and so throughout the course of the week, all students – from year 7 to Sixth Form – participated in a broad range of tutor-time activities exploring and developing understanding of the nature and importance of promoting anti-bullying:
The focus for 2009 was Cyberbullying, and so in addition to School Assemblies, activities carried out in tutor groups included:

  • Circle time discussions on forms, causes and effect of bullying
  • Designing a widget competition
  • Creating a tutor ‘Anti-bullying’ slogan
  • Online interactive Cyberbullying challenges
  • Completing Anti-bullying attitude questionnaires

The week produced a wealth of extremely positive attitudes by students and tutor groups to do their part in promoting anti-bullying and to help ‘Do the right thing – Report Bullying’. Many tutors commented on the mature and reflective responses and engagement of all students in this important theme of the week which contributes to our continued promotion of the welfare and healthy development of all students.
Posters and promotional materials have been displayed throughout the school, in corridors and in toilets – providing advice, information for young people on personal health and well-being and reinforcing our whole school commitment to working to ‘Give Bullying the Boot’.
